Detailed Programme

Monday 10th November: Day One

Workshop I: Preservative Alternatives to Parabens

This workshop gives details of the various preservative options available to formulators looking to replace parabens in cosmetic products. The use of parabens in cosmetic and personal care applications is surrounded by controversy. In spite of this, parabens are arguably the most cost-effective preservative systems available. For many years, formulators have struggled to find preservatives that can effectively replace parabens, however a number of new alternative systems are now available.

This workshop gives details of 'alternative preservative systems', especially those suitable for natural and organic cosmetics. Examples are given of product formulations that use such green preservative materials or are 'self-preserving'. The performance and formulation issues associated with these alternatives systems / materials are highlighted.

Workshop II: Reducing Environmental Impact of Cosmetics

This interactive workshop describes the various ways cosmetic and ingredient firms can reduce their environmental impacts. The first part of the workshop gives a detailed account on the various ways cosmetic products have an influence on the environment; from sourcing of raw materials, production, distribution & logistics, consumption to post-use.

Life-cycle analyses data is given to show the typical environmental footprint of cosmetic products. Metric data is given for carbon footprints, water usage, energy, waste and other environmental indicators. With the use of case studies, guidance and practical advice will be given to operators on how they can take positive steps to reduce their environmental impacts.

Tuesday 11th November: Day Two

Session One: Sustainability Initiatives

The opening session gives an update on sustainability in the cosmetics industry, showcasing pioneering initiatives. Following on from the environmental impacts workshop, industry experts show how metric data is put into practice. In the opening keynote, a leading European natural cosmetics brand shows how brands can spur innovation by taking green steps. A major Asian company shares its experiences in overcoming the sustainability hurdles: how should brands prioritise their environmental and social objectives? What are the limitations in Asia? The use of metric data in formulating sustainability plans is described, followed by papers on packaging footprints and green buildings.

Session Two: Marketing Best-Practices

Although many brands are undertaking CSR and sustainability initiatives, not all have been successful in communicating green values to consumers. This session gives case studies of natural and organic cosmetic brands that are effective in green marketing. A leading European brand shares its experiences in expanding distribution in the Asian market, whilst an American organic baby care brand highlights the potential in this high growth segment. A major Asian beauty retailer states what CSR means to the retail chain. Latest research on Asian consumer behaviour towards green products is presented, followed by a panel discussion on the possible use of metrics for marketing sustainable cosmetics.

Session Three: Natural Ingredients for Sustainability

Natural ingredients continue to make inroads in cosmetic formulations. Some brands are using natural materials for product innovations, whilst others are looking to replace contentious synthetic ingredients. Although natural ingredients have lower environmental impacts then synthetic materials, they bring new sustainability and technical issues. This session tackles some of the major developments in this area.

A major issue concerning the use of natural ingredients is traceability and authenticity. With growing incidents or mislabelling and fraud, how can cosmetic and ingredient firms ensure the authenticity of their natural ingredients? Other papers look at product innovations using natural ingredients, materials for skin whitening, and green emulsifiers & surfactants. A pioneering European brand states how it managed to overcome its raw material issues for its global launch. To conclude, featured speakers discuss some of the sustainability issues they face with natural ingredients.
